In prep for the end of August party...
Junta is a great game but coup attempts are a pain and favor those who
play/have played board games. So below is an attempt at short coup
rules. Take a look. Let me know. A pdf of the rules is in files.

Junta - Short Coup Rules
Version 1.00 - 7/20/2002
Needed:
2 dice
3 playing cards / person - 1 each of spade, club, heart
Instructions:
Rebel Leader declares coup attempt and places club card in front of
him.
Rebel Leader (and/or followers) pays $3M into coup pot. All donaters
show club card.
- If Rebels don't have $3M - no coup.
El Presidente (and/or followers) pays $3M into coup pot and shows
spade. All followers show spade.
- If El Pres et al don't have $3M coup automatically succeeds.
- El Pres and only El Pres may tap swiss account to raise $3M
Remaining players not showing cards choose a card and place it face
down.
- Spade - current regime (call a spade a spade)
- Club - new regime (club the bastard)
- Heart - I no longer have a heart; I'm a yellow coward dog
Once cards are chosen and face down remaining players turn over to
show their support (or lack thereof). Switching sides or bailing out
is not allowed in a fast coup.
Coup Resolution:
Points are added as follows for ownership:
El Presidente - Palace Guards 4
Minister - Secret Police 4
Admiral - Marines 3
- Gunboat 4
Air Force - Paratroopers 3
- Air Strikes 3
General 1 - Army 1 2
General 2 - Army 2 2
General 3 - Army 3 2
Additionally the following cards are worth 1 point:
Radicals
Students
Peasants
Starting with General 3 (if involved) event and bribe cards may be
played. All participants may play appropriate Event/influence cards.
After Gen 3 comes Gen 2, Gen 1, Air Force, Admiral, Minister, and El
Presidente.
The Create Militia event card may be played. The Militia are worth 2
points.
After all forces are created another round to play bribe cards. The
following Bribe cards may be played: 3rd Army, 2nd Army, 1st Army,
Mob, (Secret) Police. Pay the amount listed on the card but assume
only one attempt to gain control.
Total points for current regime and Rebels.
Subtract Rebels from Regime to get difference. If the difference is +6
or greater Regime wins; -6 or less Rebels win. If between these
boundaries subtract the absolute difference from 6. This is the
victory number to match or exceed with the two dice.
To the victorious side goes the pot of $6M. If the Rebels win Rebel
Leader becomes the new El Pres. Either way El Pres divies the pot
according to his/her own wishes. The money may NOT be placed into the
swiss account until proper time in the game.
Concerns:
- Bribe cards favor the current regime.
