Very thought-provoking article ....

I liked the historical overview. An especially interesting part was Lewis'
thesis that a lot of what one religion's point of view toward another one
depends on whether that religion precedes it or is subsequent to it.

He also seems to imply that the notorious intolerance of much of the Islamic
world is due to the fact that they never had to learn about other
cultures...that since the 16th Century they were effectively kept out of
Western Europe.

But he leaves out too much near the end. He says:

"then the clash between these two religiously defined civilizations results
not only from their differences but also from their resemblance-and in these
there may even be some hope for better future understanding"....

I hope that he is right, but he should spell out how we may have some hope
for future understanding, because his article sure does not.
