So here's what's been going on with us - I'll try to abbreviate.
Bob's newest project is almost done - the only snafu now is getting the
computer to render his work out, and of course it keeps crashing. (More
memory apparently isn't really the issue - he can only buy one more
increment, which of course I've encouraged him to do.) But he's making
it work. It's an animated title sequence for a movie called "Wasabi
Tuna", and it's done in a style that's sort of like "Casino Royale" or
"The Pink Panther" or "Catch Me If You Can", etc. This represents a
total break in style for Bob - he's always drawn cartoons like this, but
never professionally before. I think it looks great. Which MAY be
partially my bias, but he'd be the first to tell you I've been a fairly
unforgiving critic throughout the process. The screening is set for
August 20.
I've been trying to take it easy for the past couple of weeks, since the
baby "dropped" down into the birth position really early (at 30 weeks
rather than the expected 36 - I'm now at 34 weeks). Plus there were a
few other signs of possible impending labor, so I've been really
bothering the doctor with worry. I just had a visit today and nothing
has changed since last week, so I'm starting to calm down somewhat. But
it's been hard to try to simultaneously not move around a lot and
prepare everything that needs to be prepared in case the baby comes
early. Right now it's unclear if he'll be early and if so how early,
but my doctor is taking me off of work on the early side - my last day
before leave starts is Friday, August 15.
With Bob working night and day and me so exhausted all the time, our
house is a complete and utter mess. Not only were there still those few
boxes we moved in in April and just never got around to unpacking, but
now there are boxes and boxes of all the baby stuff I've been cramming
to buy at stores and online - almost none of which is assembled, put
away, etc. We honestly have trouble walking through our livingroom at
the moment. The dog is too clumsy to even try getting to the door
sometimes. (Some dogs can leap 6 foot fences - ours is completely
defeated by Amazon's smallest size box.) Not to mention the things like
mopping the floors ... We did have the carpets cleaned last Friday, and
will get the maid service out for a day once we find enough of the place
under the boxes for them to clean!
I look like a smallish house, if anyone is curious. But really low.
I've been singing that '70's song "Lowrider" for a while now.
We found a pediatrician today. Her name is Candice Ho (I'm betting she
does NOT go by "Candy", because talk about unfortunate if she does ...),
and Bob and I both really liked her. Of course, she made me feel
ancient - she looks about 25 at most! When this cute, perky,
fresh-faced little Chinese-American girl came in and introduced herself
as the doctor, I sneaked a look at Bob, thinking he was probably
thinking, "don't worry, honey; I'll take the baby in to the doctor
whenever you like!" ...
We also found a doula for the birth. That's sorta like a midwife only
they don't catch the baby. Even my insurance company suggests parents
get one - unfortunately they don't PAY for one. The cool and unlikely
thing is that she's OK with me considering using relaxation techniques I
learned from ReWeaving - she's experienced that way herself! But also
an EMT, and living in this world, not some other.
Balki may have another ear infection. We have to take him back in to
the vet, I think.
Oh, yeah - and we both just got jury duty summons! (Bob and I, not the
dog.) Talk about timing ...
Anyway, that's the update.
- Joya
P.s.- I'm hoping to have some time once I go on leave to send those
thank-yous I've been threatening to send before Bob's and my one-year
anniversary ...
