Wow! This is getting wacky!
It looks very likely that our next Governor will be the Terminator!
And there are Demos (Bustamante and Garamendi) who have broken ranks and are also running in the recall.
It is nearly impossible to see how Davis could survive, except through the courts.
It was my intention to vote against the recall and FOR one of the replacements...which you CAN do.
I was appalled by the opportunism of the recall, and saw it as a sour grapes right wing plot to overturn last year's election.
But I think that is now a possibly outdated view. This thing has taken a life of its own. And the very rightwing guy who made it possible has himself dropped out ( Issa)
I am leaning toward voting for Arianna Huffington, but may actually vote for Schwarzenegger. Have I gone nuts?
Here it is folks:
I have always been mistrustful of the " I Can't take it Anymore" school of politics. To some extent, that is what's going on here. Both Arianna and Arnold are lacking in real experience. So since I think Davis is doomed ( and a schmuck anyway) If these were normal times, I would be a good Democrat and vote for Bustamante, who DOES have experience and seems like a good man.
But I look at other things:.
The majority of people don't vote.
The VAST majority of the young don't vote.
The local news never covers state politics, which is very important.
Term limits, and the hyper-populism that took over CA politics in the 80's and 90's has not worked...It has made things worse.
Bustamante is a decent man, but I am afraid that if he wins, people will see it as business as usual. The paralysis will stay, and people will get more frustrated than ever.
The fact that this has gotten this far means one thing...There is NO going back.
The election of someone truly independent will be like a fresh cool shower. The media will pay attention, and I think that more people will vote.
If either one of these rich Europeans cannot handle the job, we will know soon enough, and we will go back to politics as usual.
It is no big deal, and democracy will survive.
Face it, this IS the age of media hype...So instead of fighting that fact, let us see if that can be made to work for democracy and the goodwill of all.
