Like an idiot, I took very literally the news that they would "only go on
strike against one chain." So I figured if it were Ralph's I'd just go to
Vons. Ha ha. Didn't stock up at all.
My list of household needs gets ever-longer as I try to find as many things
as possible at unorthodox places. I like discovering 1) good deals at "Jons
Market" in Glendale; 2) a few more things at Trader Joe's; 3) the variety
at the local tiny Alta Dena Dairy; and 4) all the goodies at the Pioneer
Bakery on the West Side. But I need cleaning supplies, and my spouse is
fond of convenience foods.
I've been told that the grocery store clerks know full well they'll end up
paying for health care benefits, so the "real" issues aren't being
publicized.
But I'm suspicious of management's unwillingness to talk to the media; we
just
aren't hearing that much from them. Some say this is to protect them from
possible incursions from "Super Wal-Marts" over the next five years. I just
don't see myself buying food at Wal-Mart. Ever. And I know the profits
are up at Ralph's/Vons/Albertson's at present--so the timing seems funky
for management, too.

Strangely enough, we were affected by the MTA strike yesterday to go to the
movies in Hollywood to see the special showing of "It's a Mad, Mad...World."
We
like to take the subway from North Hollywood to Hollywood Blvd. and neither
Mary nor myself even made the connection that the strike, of course, affects
all LA public transit, including our beloved Metro. So, imagine our surprise
pulling up to an empty park-n-ride lot and making the connection right there
that
it's not just the bus that ain't runnin'! We drove to H'wood and made the
movie just in the proverbial nick.
As for the grocery strike, we stocked up at Ralph's the Friday before the
strike started and will replenish via Costco and Gelson's as needs arise.
I'm an
ex-Retail Clerk and I have some reservations about the timing and reasons
behind this strike, but I'll still support their right to do it and not
cross any
picket lines.
