Update on the wet filter idea. We just had the gas company out to
check why our heater wasn't going on. (Thank goodness it was only a
dirty pilot.) Anyway, the tech said a soaking wet filter is a really
BAD idea, especially if there are lots of wires right above it (which
there are on our system). Apparently, a mildly damp filter is no big
deal, but a very wet one can evaporate quickly when the system is on,
creating a big cloud of moisture which can cause an electrical short.

Oh. Now he tells us.
