Hello, Ellen.

What part of Los Angeles did you live in, and when?

I had heard about Ann Arbor's reputation as a liberal college town
located in the middle of Michigan. This "island effect", if you want
to call it that, also might be found in New Orleans and of course Key
West, Florida.

Having visited several towns in Michigan, I would not say that the
state seemed terribly conservative, or liberal. Ann Arbor was a nice
town, one amongst many in that state. The town I liked the most,
without a doubt, was Hastings...

The only time I really experience the "island effect" was when I was
in West Berlin. Now that was an amazing place to visit!
