There's a huge controversy going on about voting machines. A lot of us
think there really needs to be a hard-copy paper trail, so ballots can
be recounted in case of a dispute (though perhaps not endlessly). Many
handicapped people, however, are delighted by them. One compromise
appears to be voting machines that produce a paper ballot (some locales
acquire only a few of these, specifically for use by the handicapped).
As far as the Michigan absentee ballot is concerned, my understanding
is that the mistake was caught and replacements were sent around. I've
read that it's only one county that's affected by this (not that this
excuses it at all, of course). There's much discussion about whether
the Bush/Cheney space is simply missing, or whether everything is
shifted down so that a Kerry/Edwards vote would count toward B/C.
Apparently it's the former, not the latter. But the ballot is still
evil; no doubt about that.
