At this moment, no snow on the nearby (visible) peaks, though there was
definitely some during the rainstorms. However, I'm sure that there's
plenty on the next tier of hills, just out of sight.
I've caught some glimpses of Mt. Baldy while driving around LA, and
it's definitely bleached white.
And when we went out to Arizona in December, there was plenty of snow
on San Gorgonio and San Jacinto out by the Idyllwild turnoff. It was
interesting to see how the shapes of those two mountains affected the
look of the snow, since we know they're both equally high, and the tops
are above the timberline--but on San Jacinto there are so many boulders
that the white is broken up, as if there *were* trees up there. On San
Gorgonio (Grayback) it's just a huge expanse of pure white, made more
dramatic by the strange, almost mesa-like wideness of that mountain at
the top. It never looks as high as it is, because it's so wide.
Ellen, SoCal kids are fascinated by snow; we can't help it. We think
it's neat, because we don't have to deal with it very often.
