What a GREAT subculture!
I remember when I saw "Dogtown', a few years ago they mentioned that the
early skateboarders would use the concrete playgrounds of Bellagio
Elementary, Kenter Canyon Elementary, and Paul Revere Jr. High...the
elementary school that I went to, the one that I NEARLY went to, and the Jr.
high that I went to.
They should rename the Ocean Park district of Santa Monica, Dogtown. It is
truly a part of out local culture and history. AND the city should sponsor
more skate parks for kids(including in the new plans for Downtown SM)
instead of banning skating everywhere. It will keep kids out of trouble and
pay tribute to a gift to our American culture that has come from the
Southern California Coast.
One of the Z-Boys, Jeff Ho, sold the first skate store on Lincoln and Ocean
Park to one Jefferson Wagner who now runs Zuma Jay's, a surf and skate store
in Malibu where a lot of my kids have worked. Tony Alva has come to my
school a few times. He has a bit of an attitude, but he does get involved in
good causes.
Spending this much time in "the 'Bu" has given me an appreciation and
respect of the camaraderie of the surf/skate "aloha" culture. The respect
that these people have for the sport, themselves. and each other is
admirable.

next month. A friend of mine was an extra in it and said it looks like it
will be a realistic portrayal of that scene.
