Three different conventions -- one each for engineers, chemists and
mathematicians -- are happening in the same hotel.
That night at 3 AM, a huge fire breaks out in the hotel.
When the fire begins to lick at the wing holding the engineers, they all get
together, form a bucket brigade, and put out the fire in their area.
This moves the fire to the wing holding the chemists. The chemists get
together, make some calculations, mix some chemicals together, and throw a
teaspoonful of a formula at the heart of the fire. It's snuffed out in
their wing.
Finally, the fire retreats to the wing where the mathematicians are staying.
They get together, make some calculations, and walk over to the heart of the
fire. They look straight at it, say, "It's solvable," and go back to bed.
