Sure I've heard of Space Elevators before. You basically start with a
geosynchronous object orbiting the same spot over Earth. Slowly have
it extend an infinitely strong string both toward and away from Earth
simultaneously, so the center of mass (object + inner string + outer
string) stays in the same place relative to the center of Earth. Let
it get long enough to reach the ground. Permanent "ladder" to the
orbiting vehicle, and beyond.

Of course the string would collapse under its own mass. Unless you
know of something stronger than what's been invented so far?

A fun concept to play with, though.

P.S. Thanks for asking. The fire is on the opposite side of Topanga
Canyon from us, and moving South and East (away from our area). We do
know a couple of folks living out that way, though, and they're ok for
now.
