Really, the only "right" way is "diligently." I've known plenty of
people who landed lovely jobs right off of Craigslist (including
about half of my company, now). It requires a lot of time, sending
out a lot of resumes, and not doing stupid stuff. My wife does
recruiting, and her horror stories that she gives about candidates
with typos in their cover letters ("attention to detail" is
apparently very easy to misspell), serious huge attitude on the
phone, complete flakiness about keeping interview dates... well. The
good news is that if you don't do that stuff, you're already ahead
about 50%, at least, of the candidates.
