He decides to get us a snack: some fruit, and a little bit of leftover
grilled salmon.

I opt for the fruit.

"Try the salmon," he tells me, and he's gone to such trouble I don't
want to share my Fish Hangup with him. Besides, while I was tasting
dishes at Bon Appetit I managed to choke down a few mouthfuls of tuna
casserole. How hard can this be to pull off?

I take a tiny bite, light on salmon and heavy on the wild rice. And of
course the rice is wonderful, and the charred taste is nice, and the
rosemary is divine--but the fish tastes like fish.

"Well?" he asks. "I grilled that myself. Isn't it the best salmon
you've ever had?"

"It is," I tell him. "It really is."
