We got to see a lot of movies for free thanks to Mary's WGA card. We
missed "Gran Torino," so it'll be Netflixed when it comes out, but both
thought that "Milk," "Nixon/Frost," and "The Wrestler" were all
fantastic. Unlike most of the movies we watch, those three are all very
memorable and ones you actually think about days and weeks after you
see them.
I saw "Slumdog Millionaire" with a buddy when Mary was visiting friends
up north at New Year's, and while I liked it, it is in no way the "feel
good" movie the hype wants you to believe it is. Maybe I'm too
sensitive to the human condition, but the poverty depicted in the film
was just awful. My friend thought so too (he didn't like the flick as
much as I did), and we both agreed there are about a million other
places we'll go to before we'd venture to India. I did think the way
the story-telling was done was fantastic, but again, found it to be far
more depressing than uplifting.
