While it is true that my preferred character is a ; rather than an x or a pi, I suppose I do exist within boxes and squares, designed by architects and engineers and other mathy types.... Fair enough.
And, while I can appreciate truly well-designed architecture, it's rare. But a correctly used semicolon is a thing of beauty, always.
I teach the semicolon thusly:
I write on the board, My husband used to beat me. He's dead now.
Then I change the period to a semicolon.
Now that's pretty! ;-)
