What kind of chess is this?

OK, I remember this from the Samohi computer lab. Two players, two
boards, separated by a partition, with a referee who tells the moving
player whether a move was allowed (by saying "no" if it is not), and
whether there is a "try" (ability for one piece to take another), as
well as checks and checkmates.

What is the name of this game? Anyone remember?
