I had tea once at Professor Volokh's house; he served it out of a samovar,
and I informed him that in my crowd we used to call them Samohis. (He
himself went to Beverly Hills High. His Russian accent is very subtle,
except of course over the phone. How did I get to know him? Long story.)

Before tea, though, we had apple martinis, and he was talking about the
volume in the martini glass as it might relate to a cylinder defined by the
glass above the stem.

"Doesn't that depend on how shallow it is?" I asked.

"No," he replied, and the diagram of a triangle within a rectangle from
Paul's book crossed my mind.

"You're right," I responded. "I just needed to bring that into three
dimensions. I'm better now."

Mickey Kaus of Slate was there, too. That would be the Mickey Kaus who just
filed papers to run for Barbara Boxer's Senate seat. He's very nice, so I
may be voting for a liberal democrat this fall. He's a smart guy. Good
writer.
