MASTER LIST OF CABIN TRIPS
Which ones am I forgetting, guys & gals?
1) Winter of '77-'78, before my time (Elton John/Janis Ian playing in
the background?).
2) Winter of '78-'79, when Dean and I got together and there were
three Cabins (that trip spawned the "Sanctuarian" revolt, which was
ruthlessly put down).
3) Summer of 1979, small trip with Tom Hill, Annye, Jack Watt, Dean,
JJT. This was more of a "Sanctuarian" trip than a full-on Olive one.
4) Winter of 79-80, organized by Margaret, took place IIRC in Lake
Arrowhead; Annye was in attendance, and so was Clem. Big
end-of-the-1970s bacchanale on New Year's Eve, and someone (most
likely JJT) still has awkward video to prove it. Eric, Sandy, and
maybe Cindy were off in a side room--with Tassie Hadlock? They rarely
came out. Nora Zungri and I smoked a joint leaning out of the upper
bathroom window, and Margaret blew a gasket over that. John set off a
couple of firecrackers indoors, which (oddly) I don't remember
Margaret getting upset at at all. I wonder if she got her deposit back
that time?
5) Summer of 1980, Pine Cove/Idyllwild, a big trip. The guys played
guitar and juggled. We had at least one naked picnic in "the
grotto"--the rocky area around Strawberry Creek. I was with Domingo by
then; later on Rin spread rumors that Dean and I had somehow managed
to have sex illicitly in the middle of a cabin full of 20-25 people or
so.
6) I think we had a normal winter trip in the winter of 80-81, and I
drove Domingo, John T., and Janet Roebuck up to Idyllwild for it. This
might have been when the sledding craze started.
7) February 1981, small-scale "study trip" that included Tom Hill,
John, Jennifer Epelbaum, maybe Amy Reagin, and Janine, among others. I
caught hell for this trip because I'd just started at UCLA, and my
mother was convinced that I was "socializing," rather than "studying."
It was only a few weeks later than we had the blowout that led to my
leaving home for good.
Then there was a bit of a break for a few years. Suddenly, it was the mid-1980s.
8) There was a summer trip in the mid-1980s in which Dean, DC, and
DC's dad spent a few days dropping acid or whatever before the rest of
us showed up.
9) There was a small spring or summer trip in 1986 organized by Mike Marinacci.
10) I think I started the next series in the winter of 86-87. Big
trip, Carolyn's Comminglarium, my first time in the pilot's seat, and
I pulled an all-nighter the night before we drove up.
11) 87-88. This might have been the time we went to the Schreiber
cabin, which had high ceilings and a hot tub. John Turley and Doselle
both loved that place, though it only had three bedrooms. Paul and
Kate were on that trip.
12) 88-89, back at the Comminglarium. This might have been the time we
left the "time capsule" in a corner of the kitchen, which . . . well,
we ended up finding ourselves a year or two later.
13) 89-90, Comminglarium. Bisbee was there, I think.
14) Summer of 1990, July--right after the Olive Reunion, which I was
unable to attend because I was working. This one took place in a
campground/set of cabins in Big Sur.
15) 90-91. Comminglarium. I took my husband along (then-boyfriend);
what a mistake. It snowed hard, and Debbie Oisboid was determined to
drive up the hill through the deep snow, and it took her many
attempts. John M. was able to do it in one try in his little Toyota,
but he's from Chicago.
16) 91-92. By then Joya Beebe and I were roommates. She and Mike
Marinacci were an item, and stayed nearby in a little cottage rather
than at the Comminglarium with the rest of us. Some of the guys
decided that they should take a group picture, and it didn't include
me even though I'd organized the trip. I hit Lenny on the jaw. It was
sort of over, for a time.
This might have been the trip during which Bisbee found out that I am,
indeed, allergic to cats, because Carolyn asked us to take care of her
cat up there during New Year's week. Even though we kept the door
closed a lot of the time, we had to open it to let SOME heat into that
bedroom, and it was miserable for me. It was also pretty miserable for
Keith and Bisbee, who slept in that cold bedroom.
After that, Keith didn't want to sleep in that bedroom again, because
he thought of it as the "cold" one. And because I know that, I think
there might have been one more trip in that cabin, but perhaps my
timeline on the "cat trip" is wrong--maybe it happened a year or two
earlier.
So . . . maybe one in 92-93?
I'm not sure about the trips in the mid-1990s through the early 2000s.
They mostly took place in David Eadington's family cabin, and I think
I only went on two of 'em (1995 or so, and circa 2001).
17) The one in 2005 or so with Sue and her husband/kids, the Beebes,
the Archibeque-Coonses, the Oisboids, John T, Bibi, and me. Frazier
Park area.
