This belief (that the passport story is a practical joke) has bothered
me since I first heard that a handful of people held it. Let us be
charitable and say that--rather than having no pattern-recognition
ability--the people who hold this belief simply haven't paid enough
attention to your jokes to understand what your patterns are. Okay.

It is still monumentally insulting to you to suggest that you would be
so elaborately flip and cavalier about an event of this magnitude, with
3,000 dead--particularly given that you have family and close friends
living and working nearby. It's outrageous.

There's also the fact that the initial e-mail about this odd occurrence
went out to people whom you would never have cc'd on any kind of practical
joke. There was just no way.
