John,
While I haven't taken one myself, I can tell you that CSUN offers a lot of courses online, some of which I'm familiar with. One of my mentors has just developed a Motivation course online for G.E. credit. These courses have been very successful and are getting better all the time. They are usually quite different in structure from the standard lecture class. There is sometimes a short weekly meeting, sometimes you will only meet for the final, but there's usually a set time for online chats. I have a friend in the military that is doing an entire Master's degree online (it's really the only way he could) and he doesn't find it impersonal at all. He feels that the interaction he gets during chats is pretty valuable. I imagine that, at least in some cases, there's actually MORE interaction with students because they are forced to participate in discussion. In the classroom it's much easier to just sit back & observe.
I, myself, give all quizzes online & provide dowloadables, but this obviously doesn't replace lectures or classroom activities.
Hope that helps.

Has anyone here ever taken a college extension course over the
Internet? I am considering doing this, but wonder how effective it
might be. (Obviously, there are certain courses where this is not
practical, such as foreign languages. In my case, I am looking into
something like accounting or economics.)

I am not talking about getting a law degree in the mail, but just
taking a course, or two. :-)

Nowadays, it seems a lot of courses are offered over the Internet,
and my life would be a lot simpler if I could do it this way. But
somehow, without the personal interaction, I am really left wondering
about it. Any input that anyone has would be welcome. Any one of you
ever done this?

John

PS Sorry not to have posted any responses in a while. I was asked by
some kind folks about my new job. I promise to post something soon.
It is fantastic so far, but also time consuming. More details to
follow...
