Yes, they still do. Consider the case of John Ashcroft and Mel
Carnahan a few years ago: They were both running for the senate in the
state of Missouri. Mel Carnahan was killed in a plane accident before
the election. It was too close to the election to pull Carnahan's name
from the ballot. In spite of this, Carnahan WON the election anyway.

In this case, Bustamonte would probably select the LG himself. Maybe
he should pick Davis??
