Ah, the Z Channel -- I remember it well.
My dad, who's a major movie buff, sprang for it as soon as it was available,
and a wise investment it was indeed. As a 13-15 YO growing up in Santa
Monica, it allowed me my first glimpses of cinematic T&A, ultraviolence, and
the generally cynical attitude of post-EASY-RIDER/pre-STAR-WARS Hollywood.
One of Z's great coups was somehow getting ahold of a print of THE
MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE around '75, and screening it a few times before Ol'
Blue Eyes could have it yanked from the new medium. That film has had a
major, permanent impact on my political worldview, and I've never been able
to play a game of solitaire without thinking of it.
