The complications with that passport have been worse than you might
think.

The first problem, after getting over my own disbelief that this could
possibly have happened, was discovering that NO newspapers would
believe it either. My sister wrote many letters to different places.
No answers. Then the Smithsonian seemed to be interested, and suddenly
dropped it! Even when they could easily call the NYPD 5th Precinct to
find out that my passport HAD in fact been found at the WTC site...

It was more than a year after 9/11 when my father was in Ireland and
spoke to some newspaper folks about my passport. They were intrigued
enough and followed up with phone calls. They called the NYPD to
verify! I then got a radio interview, and later an article appeared in
the local Irish newspaper. Unfortunately, this newspaper has the look
and feel of our National Enquirer. There were inaccuracies in this
newspaper story (to sell more papers, of course), though it was still
correct overall.

I have gotten a lot of well-intentioned advice on what to do WRT
getting a new passport. I really don't know how to proceed. It's a big
frustration.

I will be speaking with an attorney next week about this. He may have
an idea of what to do. I will keep you posted.
