I generally start my Sunday morning walks along the
sidestreets to the beach. From there I walk south
into Venice along the boardwalk. When I return I
cut over to Main Street to hit the Farmer's Market
before heading home.
Last Sunday, however, I had to stop by the bank, so I
cut over to Main a bit further south than usual. That
took me past the shops on Main, specifically "Jadis".
For those of you not from Santa Monica, Jadis is a
store that specializes in movie props. They always
have a very impressive window display, full of big,
old-fashioned technology, and featuring the robot from
the movie "Metropolis".

Oh, one other thing about Jadis: It's never open. I
don't mean that it keeps odd hours. It's _never_ open.
This is one of those things on the short list about
Santa Monica: There's a fireworks display on the 4th
of July. A bus ride costs 25 cents. Meet at station 8.
Zucky's is always open. Jadis, never.
Well, as we all know, nothing lasts forever, rules were
meant to be broken, and jackdaws love my big sphinx of
quartz. Sure enough Zucky's has closed, and at least
last Sunday, Jadis was open!
I was astounded, of course, walking around the
shop. It was not quite as filled-to-the-brim as it
might have been, but it was cluttered. Lots of lab
technology, like those HUGE glass bulbs that hold
boiling chemicals. There were old typewriters, big
viewfinder cameras, and many telephones. One amazing
device was an old quack medical thing, lots of dials,
very cool.
And of course, you could hear everybody saying as they
were browsing, "but ... this store is _never_ open ...."
Bark!
