RE: Re: but ... this store is _never_ open ....
It's probably VERY profitable because Jadis rents out that stuff to the
studios. Period movies need period 'stuff' and it's far easier to go rent
it for a few months than try to reproduce it. That way the stuff doesn't
have to be warehoused (and lost) by the studio.
There are a whole bunch of little curio/junque/"antique" stores along one of
the main streets in Burbank. Some are on property that's half as wide as a
normal house lot, so we're talking TINY shops. But they stay in business
for decades. I suspect they're all owned by little old folks who must have
abnormally low property tax rates because while they do seem to attract
business I don't see how they could possibly stay in business but they do.
They may be able to rent out some of that stuff, but I wonder. The bigger
stores that can store and move furniture do rent out - one shop had the most
wonderful traveler's wardrobe from the late 1800's. Beautifully designed,
cleverly built, must've weighed a ton fully loaded but would have been
perfect for that steam across the Atlantic or 'round the Horn. Or a trip on
the Orient Express. Wonder what the woman's version was like? Hm.
