I would recommend Perl. It's a good starter language, and similar to
other important ones out there. Even if you learn Perl and eventually
use something else, you'll have gotten some idea of how programming
languages work.

Well, it' would be a silly waste of time to learn those. When you
travel to Europe, everyone speaks English, anyway. ;-)
