I was going to recommend either Perl or Python as a first language.

Although Perl is more cryptic and what some call a write-only
language, you'd get plenty of help from Peter Scott and JT.

Python, however, is considerably more modern and easier to use.
It has the added benefit of using indentation instead of braces
to nest instructions and makes an excellent beginner's language.

That said, I know neither, and still use Bourne shell and K&R C
to excellent effect. Database integration will compel me to
finish learning Python, Perl or perhaps PHP since it goes so
well with MySQL and internet applications.

Any thoughts on this, Christophe?
