Briefly: I was attacked on a Fullerton sidewalk on Friday night.
Physically I'm fine. I'm confused.
The story:
I went to Disneyland with some friends on Friday night. We hung out
nearly till the park closed at midnight. I took the Harbor Blvd. bus
to Orangethorpe, in Fullerton, and started walking the two-plus miles
home. A few minutes into my walk, two guys stopped me. I think they
were trying to look menacing, and they partly succeeded. One of them
asked me, "Why you talkin' $#!% about me?" I said something brilliant,
like "Huh?" He repeated his question, then punched me in the jaw.
They stood and glared at me a moment more, then ran away.
The guy didn't really hurt me, though I had a bit of a headache the
next day. I'll admit it's a bit scary to think what might have
happened if they'd started really beating on me, but the thing that's
bothering me most is not knowing what the guy was talking about.
Of course, as you'll all remember from high school, I'm a really,
really bad judge of whether someone is being serious or not, so maybe
that was his idea of a joke. It didn't seem like it, though. He
really seemed to think that I, personally and specifically, had injured
him. If it had been one guy, I'd just figure he was crazy, but with
two guys I don't know what to think.
BTW, I did call the cops, who seemed to resent the fact that I was
bothering them with something so minor. They seemed suspicious that I
had gotten off the bus so far from home; when I pointed out that the
more convenient buses didn't run into the evening, they seemed to think
I was being a smart-a$$.
One of the cops suggested that I get myself a can of Mace to carry
around. I didn't bother pointing out that what put me at a
disadvantage wasn't inferior force but slow reaction time--by the time
I realized what was going on, I would have had to chase after them to
spray them. Conversely, if I'd been more alert, I probably could have
hit the guy back, and harder than he hit me, at that.
Anyway, it's over, I guess. A random event with no consequences. If I
were a blogger, it would give me something to blog about, but I'm not,
so you get subjected to it instead. Thanks for reading.
