parties and urban transit . . .
1) First of all, I'm really sorry about flaking on the Oisboid party; I just
fell asleep. It was so hot! I'l do better, or maybe I won't.
2) Coonsie, when are your houseguests due? I'll try to stop in tomorrow or
Thursday and pick up my junk and give you your pillows, but please tell me
what my drop-dead deadline is. I don't suppose you're having the carpet
cleaned/replaced in the den, are you? It's totally worth thinking about
doing that.
3) I'm doing A LOT of research on public transit in L.A. right now, so I
need to hear from Dean [YES, DEB--THAT MEANS, PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO YOUR
HUSBAND], John T., and anyone else who's been noodling around with
rail/bus/other public transit in this city. People who have studied this
tell me that the U.S. should be able to get its regional transit act
together--that we ought to be able to go to to the Bay Area, Las Vegas, or
San Diego by train without it being a big headache.
This train thing fascinates me, like the whole issue of alternative
energies/how to keep the petroleum flowing while we wait for the research to
be done on The Next Big Thing. I have a few contacts in petroleum and
natural gas; I need to develop a few in Nuclear, which we're neglecting even
more shamelessly than we are petro.
It occurs to me that if I'm serious about researching rail, I should accept
the challenge of living in (supposedly) the most hostile public
transportation metropolis area in the entire continental U.S., and simply
try GOING PLACES once a week via rail/bus. I actually did fine using buses
when I was a teenager, and it can't have gotten any WORSE. I should make
Friday, or Tuesday, my "rail adventures" day and just see what's possible.
How long does it take to get downtown? To the beach? To the Hollywood Bowl?
I need to find out.
So please send me your favoritest resources on public transit, mmkay?
