My advice is not worry so much about it. Just pick someplace you want
to go and go there. Please have exact change ready. Daily and monthly
passes are available. The driver will gladly call out requested stops.
Please stand behind the yellow line when the bus is in motion.
L.A. County's buses are crowded and dirty, but the service is fairly
complete throughout Downtown and all points south and west. I don't
know about north and east.
Google Transit is useful for some places, but not so much for L.A.:

L.A. County buses:

L.A. City buses:

Santa Monica buses:

Glendale buses:

San Gabriel Valley buses:

Also, if you're going to be riding Metro (L.A. County) buses much,
you'll probably want some sort of personal entertainment device (with
headphones). Not so much to block out the noise of the passengers or
the traffic, but because they've installed these video screens which
provide on-board "entertainment" that I find almost unbearably
obnoxious.
