Hello from Redding, California!

Hi, All.
Sorry, Dean and Deb; won't be able to make it tonight! But we'll be thinking
of you. Will someone sneak a drink into the hot tub tonight on my behalf,
past Deb's watchful eye? And will someone please, please stay up past
midnight, and never mind that we're in our 40s? John T? David Coons? Anyone?
(Bueller?)
I thought of Dean and Mike Perlmutter as I passed through Yreka yesterday--I
remember getting postcards from their road trips in this area.
John and I are cooling our heels at a Motel 6, getting a few repairs done on
JP's Saturn, but it looks like they are minor, and we'll be back on the road
in a few hours; thank G-d we got through the mountain passes safely last
night.

I absolutely have to be in the office on Friday, so before we knew the
repairs were small ones I was contemplating hopping onto a Greyhound bus
tonight, and flying back to L.A. on New Year's Day. That would have included
at least two cab rides (from here to the Greyhound station, and from the
Sacto Greyhound station to the Sacto airport).

Instead, I'll be driving tonight: I told John, "if you get your car back on
the road, I'll get us to Los Angeles by midnight." Only fair, since he took
the mountain driving last night and got us to this major metropolis--where
they have Motel 6's, auto repair shops, and all that sort of amenity. (I
didn't like his old tires, and was petrified that I'd hit a patch of ice if
I drove at the speeds he was driving. Under ordinary conditions, of course,
I'm the one with a lead foot, but we all have our limits, and I knew he
could handle ice patches better than I can. At any rate, I figured we'd die
together if he took a turn too hard, and there was something sweet about
that.)

It was odd to pass by Mount Shasta in a hurry; what an amazing sight--both
from Oregon, and up close from Northern CA. (We made it over two state lines
yesterday, and over two mountain passes.)

Yes. We did make lots of bad jokes about the town of Weed as we went through
there. It has an airport; we weren't sure that was wise.

After spending Christmas Day in airports on my was TO Washington State for
Christmas week, I'll be spending New Year's Eve dodging drunk drivers on our
way back.

My life has, indeed, turned into a John Candy movie.

You all be good, and let's be careful out there. Especially tonight; there
will be all kinds of drunk drivers on the road, who don't take the
precaution of putting their vodka into a water glass, telling Deb that's
what it is, and having Dean take a slug to confirm that it is, indeed,
"water."
