There is a real dignity in accepting one's time, in not bankrupting the family doing every possible extreme thing for years, in not making everyone else's life all about your medical needs for years.

I'm all for good medical care, of course, and for doing what can and should be done. But there is a time to stop, and we don't always know that.

To accept that we age and eventually pass is a healthier attitude, but one we have no practice with (especially in youth-obsessed SoCal). I'm glad your mother's family and friends were able to celebrate her life and its natural end.

We're all going to be going through the same thing in the next decade or two, but perhaps it's some comfort that we have each other. Come home so we can hug you.
