Question for the geeks out there

I know I'm opening a barrel o' trouble by asking this, but maybe no one reads the group website very often so the arguments won't be too horrific.
I am considering converting one of the computers at home to a linux-based OS. Knowing I'm only a nerd, not a geek, and prefer GUI and would like to continue using several Window-based programs for work purposes, what OS would you recommend and why?
