Yay LInux!

We use Ubuntu Linux for our network file server.

On it, we run the ZFSonLinux file system because it resists silent data corruption and supports automatic snapshots.

Our Macintosh clients talk to the server with NFS.  AFP drops all sorts of AppleDouble files in any folder you even look at, updating the timestamp of the folder to today's date even if you didn't modify the contents.  Very annoying.  So use NFS.  My insider contact at Apple says even *they* use NFS.

Our Windows client talks to the sever with its native SMB protocol.

I know I'm opening a barrel o' trouble by asking this, but maybe no one reads the group website very often so the arguments won't be too horrific.
I am considering converting one of the computers at home to a linux-based OS.  Knowing I'm only a nerd, not a geek, and prefer GUI and would like to continue using several Window-based programs for work purposes, what OS would you recommend and why?
Thanks for any advice.
