This could just be snob appeal, ( although why JPL are snobs I don't know.)
Everyone has heard of Pasadena, as opposed to La Canada Flintridge...which
brings up a point..any maybe Joy, you can be sort of a local historian.
When I was a little tyke way back in the 60's. I think that La Canada and
Flintridge were two difference cities!
Without doing a Web search, does anyone know when they merged?
My recollection--without checking--is that it was in the early 80s. I live
in Flintridge, and it was up here that the opposition to the merge was
especially fierce (the local snobs were afraid that their property taxes
would be subsidizing La Canada schools--which certainly happens, but keeps
our property values intact).
It is a little weird, because now our town is bifurcated by a freeway, but
it's probably better overall. Locals just call the whole thing "La Canada,"
or "LCF."
