Re: The Circus has come to Town
I would prefer Riordan to Davis, who is incredibly bland, as indebted
to corporate interests as most Republicans, and at the far right of
the Democratic spectrum.
That said, Davis has also been extremely unlucky and most of the
budgetary mess is not his fault. The dot-com bubble bursting and
resulting business flight (both from companies going under and others
moving out of the state because property costs have gotten so out of
hand) cost this state most of that money through lost taxes. The
energy crisis was not Favis' responsibility, and it's now clear that
the state was being cheated by the energy companies. Davis signed the
energy contracts under great duress (there was a huge outcry to do
something to guarantee that we had a regular supply of electricity,
and there really was a feeling that the price spiral might not have a
top).
So go ahead and lay any number of complaints at Davis' feet (beholden
to special interests, the Oracle scandal, a greater concern for his
own political future than for the state of California), but he is a
minor player in our state's current financial crisis, and any
Republican governor would be finding him or herself in a similar
fiscal hole.
The recall will be a circus and a waste of money, and while I won't
cry to see Davis go, our state will be more hurt than helped by the
recall, at least for the next 18 months.
- David.
